Well… here’s one way to kick off the spooky season.
Columbus police are investigating a home near Reynoldsburg on Cummington Road after a buried rug found by the homeowners sparked widespread internet speculation.
The investigation began when Katie Santry and her boyfriend discovered the carpet rug while digging in their backyard to install a fence. She noted that after digging, they noticed strange occurrences in the home… Her computer screen was “shattered”, and items on her desk had been moved around. Santry posted videos on TikTok joking about a possible dead body in the rug.
The videos went viral, with one reaching over 7.9 million views.
CPD conducted a preliminary investigation with K-9 units but found “no conclusive evidence”. As Santry and her boyfrriend continues to dig, Columbus’ homicide unit contacted her to request a more thorough search. This led to cadaver dogs being brought to the property. Santry live-streamed the moment the dogs reacted to the buried carpet, with over 100,000 people watching.
In a statement, CPD confirmed they are continuing their investigation but have not disclosed any findings. Santry says she never expected the situation to gain so much attention.
She plans to use her platform to raise funds for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.
Santry purchased the house in 2020, and the previous owners, who built it in 1967, have no knowledge of any pets or items buried in the yard.
While CPD has not confirmed the significance of the rug, they have left further digging up to Santry— stating that they cannot allocate more resources unless further information is discovered.
