Being the only major release this weekend, the horror action flick “Resident Evil: Afterlife” led the weekend box office easily beating out previously released films “Takers” and last week’s top film “The American.

The 3D “Resident Evil” film earned $27.7 million this weekend, exceeding expectations, according to the Associated Press.

Its the fourth film in the “Resident Evil” franchise, all films starring Milla Jovovich. This installment opened better than the three previous movies.

Screen Gems’ “Takers” earned $6.1 million in its third week of release, enough to give it second place, while the George Clooney thriller “The American,” took in $5.9 million for Focus Features for third.

Down two from last week to #4, Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete” earned $4.2 million in its second weekend.

And, closing out the top 5 was “Going The Distance,” holding at the position in its second weekend.

With an estimated box-office total of $82 million, it was the lowest grossing weekend of the year.

That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of the animated Lionsgate film “Alpha and Omega” (Christina Ricci), Universal’s horror “Devil”, the Emma Stone romantic comedy “Easy A”, and Warner Bros’ crime drama “The Town” starring Ben Affleck”.

This weekend’s top 10 is as follows:

1 – “Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D,” $27.7 million.

10 – “Eat Pray Love,” $2.9 million.
