It’s amazing how all of the best concerts seem to occur in the middle of the summer. Is there more freedom when you don’t have to worry about layers and standing in long lines in the cold? Maybe the nice weather in the DMV this weekend proved that R&B, soul and Hip Hop are complimentary elements and all special ingredients to a majorly successful Summer Spirit Fest.
It sure looks that way as our friends from the east coast area have passed along some amazing footage and content from the show which featured some the greatest talent on the planet. Starting with Common who actually professed his love for the DMV before addressing his upcoming projects. Then there was awkward and intriguing superstar Janelle Monae with her space age soulful solutions to the world’s greatest mystery – love.
There were many big shots on the stage including the legendary Roots Crew, but the number one titan of them all was our girl Erykah Badu. Decked out similar to how we spotted her at Paul Brown Stadium during this year’s Macy’s Music Festival, Ms. Badu turned up the eccentricities just a notch sporting a bleache blond sky-high mohawk very reminiscent of Sallie Who from Whoville. Yeah, that’s liberation for you, right? Gotta love her because no matter what she startles you with in ensemble or wardrobe, she more than makes up for it when she drops a funky rhyme or two over old school Hip Hop beats and sings you into a frenzy with her sporatic jazzy soprano. The woman always will be bad! Go girl!
