It’s official! We’ve seen Mary J. Blige, the Queen of Hip Hop/Soul, taking her place atop the charts for years. Her music has appealed to the masses with each new album and new film project she’s be a part of, but even after a few early successes on the big screen, Mary has decided she is finally ready for something more challenging.

She’s stepping up her acting game and beefing up her film/television resume after starring in Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad All by Myself,” and will be the voice and face intended to capture the essence of Nina Simone in the upcoming biopic we’ve been waiting for.

The multi-talented heroine of a singer will play the legendary jazz pioneer in Cynthia Mort’s “Nina,” according to reports this week. The biopic will also focus on Simone’s long lasting relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson, who will be played by David Oyelowo.

Check out the photo if you’re unsure of just who he is. Nigerian-born Oyelowo is also confirmed to play heroic civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. in Lee Daniels‘ upcoming film titled Selma. (Now that should be an interest one to look out for, right?)

I don’t know about you all, but this is a huge undertaking and I’m more than elated to know that my girl Mary J. Blige is getting ready to take on this film project. She’s been talking about wanting to do this for the longest. Nina Simone was an incredible talent and one of the most iconic artists of all time.

I’m so glad that Mary J. Blige finally got her wish to play Ms. Simone because it is long overdue. A tribute, an homage, a biopic, a music sample…I’m just glad someone is doing something for Nina Simone, her legacy and her contributions to music. If Mary J. Blige does well with this one, there’s no stopping her. She will definitely have to give it her all.

So tell me, what do you think of this week’s hot entertainment news? Are you just as excited for Mary as we are? Based on Mary J. Blige’s track record, do you think she’s ready or capable of pulling this one off? Post your thoughts, comments and well wishes for Mary’s new film project in the comments section below.
