African-American women are being given hysterectomies at an ALARMING RATE. Approximately three-out-of-every-four African-American women have uterine fibroids, women as young as 23 years old have been given hysterectomies because of uterine fibroids. The tragedy is that too often; women are steered towards getting a hysterectomy by their gynecologist and not given all options. Uterine fibroids do not necessarily mean a hysterectomy; there is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment available — Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). Uterine Fibroid Embolization is a proven, non-surgical alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy (for the treatment of fibroids).
