The eastern seaboard is on high alert on this Friday morning as Hurricane Irene threatens low-lying cities throughout the Carolinas all the way up to parts of New York. Travel has been discouraged as many of the airports on the Atlantic have already begun to cancel flights in and out of the area.

Already a Category 3, Hurricane Irene is packing strong winds of 110 mph and has unfortunately cancelled previously scheduled events related to the memorial unveiling, rally and dedication services for the new Martin Luther King Jr. monument.

For those of us planning to travel to the D.C. area for the dedication events, our official trip with the local members of the National Action Network (NAN) has been postponed indefinitely. We will keep you updated on the progress as a potential rescheduling for the trip may soon become available.

We’ll be watching closely all weekend long as the east coast prepares to either stay put or make a run for it to safety. All areas in the projected path for the storm have been notified to prepare for the worst.
