The third annual ‘BET Honors’ special made a come back to celebrate the accomplishments of Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, Ruth Simmons and renowned neurosurgeon Keith Black.

At the event, the network, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, pays tribute to distinguished African Americans in entertainment, media, education, public service and entrepreneurship, highlighting them at the start of Black History Month.

Stephen Hill, BET’s president of music programming and specials, is excited to bring back the show.

“Each of our six celebrants are dedicated to reaching back to help bring more forward,” he said. “They represent integrity, perseverance, fortitude and outsized talent. Music, merriment and memories are only a small part of ‘BET Honors.’ We also hope to encourage our viewers to embody and emulate the passion and drive of these individuals.”

Last year’s honoree, Mary J. Blige, will join India.Arie, Jennifer Hudson and Patti LaBelle and others to pay tribute to the luminaries.

Actress Gabrielle Union returns to the host of the festivities. The show was taped on Jan.16 at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., and aired again February 6, 2010.
