Jeff Bridges’ sci-fi sequel, “Tron: Legacy”, leaped to the top of the box office this weekend, beating out the new animated “Yogi Bear” and the comedy “How Do You Know.”
“Tron” raked in $43.6 million in its three-day total, beating out any other movie by a mile.
The Disney release reboots the story line started in Bridges’ 1982 tale “Tron,” in which his character is hurtled into a deadly virtual reality known as the Grid. The new film co-stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde.
In at #2 was Dan Aykroyd’s family flick “Yogi Bear,” starting with a weak $16.7 million. It features the voices of Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake in an adaptation of the TV cartoon about the picnic-basket-thieving bear.
According to the Associated Press, Warner Bros. expects the film to hold up through Christmas and New Year’s with children out of school over the holidays.
Last weekend’s top movie, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” fell to #3 with $12.4 million, raising its total to $42.7 million.
Mark Wahlberg’s “The Fighter” shot up the rankings to #4, pulling in $12.2 million following its nationwide expansion. The film is based on the life of real-life fighter Micky Ward.
Closing out the top 5 was Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie’s “The Tourist, a remake of the 2005 French movie. It earned $8.7 million, down 47% from its opening weekend.
And, the final new release, Reese Witherspoon’s love-triangle romance “How Do You Know”, failed to make any noise, opening at #8 with just $7.6 million. The movie co-stars Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson.
