The most famous celebrity slip-and-fall accidents happened in the most embarrassing way possible, often in front of thousands, if not millions, of onlookers. And social media means that those who couldn’t be there for the original got to see the celebrity bloopers afterward.

Thankfully, we don’t know of any celebrities who have died in famous slip mishaps; many other Americans have not been so fortunate. The National Safety Council reports that 48,308 people died in 2024 from fall accidents at home or at work. So these celebrities can count themselves lucky not to have gone viral, rather than ending up in the emergency room.

Madonna and the Cape, Brit Awards 2015

Madonna is well-known for her lavish stage performances. Unfortunately for her, at the 2015 Brit Awards, she suffered one of the most notorious entertainment mishaps ever.

A backup dancer tried to remove her Armani cape as part of a routine. The only problem was that it didn’t yield. Instead, the dancer yanked the cape – and Madonna – backwards down a flight of stairs.

Madonna revealed she was faced with a choice: get strangled, or fall backwards. Although she suffered whiplash and a blow to the head, we’re sure you’d agree that she made a sensible choice.

Ian McKellen at the Noël Coward Theatre, 2024

One of the most memorable star falls involved renowned – and aged – actor of stage and screen Ian McKellen. In 2024, he was performing a battle scene in the play Player Kings. He lost his footing and fell from the stage, with the audience hearing a terrifying cry as he fell.

Despite being 85 years of age at the time of the fall, the accident was not as serious as it could have been. He was helped by two doctors in the audience at the time and went on to spend three days in hospital with a fractured wrist. He was forced to withdraw from the role.

Gabrielle Henry at Miss Universe 2025

Among the more serious famous slip incidents was Miss Jamaica Gabrielle Henry’s tumble in Bangkok as part of the Miss Universe 2025 show. Lighting conditions were poor, causing her to misjudge a step and crash to the ground.

She was carried out on a stretcher and taken to hospital, where she was diagnosed with an intracranial hemorrhage, fracture, and face lacerations. Thankfully, she has gone on to make a full recovery.
