Gun Gesture Sparks NBA Investigation of Morant
NBA Investigates Ja Morant’s Finger-Gun During Game Against Warriors

The NBA is investigating Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant after he made a finger-gun gesture toward the Golden State Warriors’ bench during their game on April 1, 2025. The incident occurred late in the fourth quarter after a timeout, following a free throw by the Warriors’ Jimmy Butler that increased their lead to 132-125. Morant extended his left arm in a motion that appeared to mimic firing a gun, prompting concern and a response from Warriors forward Draymond Green, who approached a game official. Additionally, Warriors player Buddy Hield made a similar gesture from the bench prior to the free throw. Both Hield and Morant received technical fouls for their actions.
This incident is particularly significant given Morant’s history with firearm-related controversies. He was previously suspended twice in 2023 for displaying guns on social media, resulting in a total of 33 games sidelined. The NBA’s current investigation will determine if further disciplinary action is warranted, which could impact the tightly contested Western Conference playoff standings. Golden State’s win has pushed them into fifth place, just ahead of Memphis.
