The incident was captured on a series of camera phones on the platform in Oakland. The video caught a young man face down in a train station with an officer, former police officer Johannes Meheserle attempting to arrest him. There seemed to be a bit of a struggle. At one point the officer stood up, removed his gun from his holster and fatally wounded Oscar Grant. The officer admitted he thought he was pulling his taser, when in actuality he mistakenly pulls his gun and kills Mr. Grant.
The murder trial has come to a close and the outcome has been anything but peacefully. The city of Oakland is in unrest after the verdict came down. Thus far 800 people have been arrested. There have been several riots, boycotts, police reform and it has been reported that in one particular area is being hit hard by the destruction.
Johannes Meheserle was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
