As was expected, President-Elect Donald Trump has officially tapped ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson to serve as secretary of state.
Trump released a statement early this morning (Tuesday) saying Tillerson’s “tenacity, broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics make him an excellent choice for Secretary of State.” The Senate will still need to confirm Tillerson, which may not be a sure thing since many are concerned about his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as his lack of government and diplomacy experience.
Tillerson said he will restore “the credibility of the United States’ foreign relations and advance our country’s national security,” and pleded to “focus on strengthening our alliances, pursuing shared national interests and enhancing the strength, security and sovereignty of the United States.” (USA Today)
