Last season the New York Jets hosted one of the more attention-grabbing QB battles in the league as Geno Smith and Michael Vick vied for the coveted starting spot. This year Smith has the job all to himself according to the Jets’ new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

“He’s very talented,” Gailey told ESPN of the 24-year old QB. “I have high hopes for him.”

Gailey obviously isn’t alone and Jets fans will be hoping that Smith can start out the new season the way he capped off the last. While he’s put up a worrying number of interceptions in his first two seasons—34—Smith also boasted the best possible passer rating in the Jets’ last game of the 2014 season.

When asked outright about the prospect of Smith starting the Jets’ opener against the Cleveland Browns on September 13, Gailey said, “Don’t make me say, ‘Yes,’ but probably.”
