So let’s see what’s been going on this week, oh yeah, everyone is getting ready for Halloween!  Between hunting for the perfect costume, watching all of your favorite Halloween movies, your favorite TV shows airing their Halloween specials, and Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ playing on every radio station, you don’t have time for much else do you?  Speaking of movies, I was thinking about something the other day.  Where is our modern day Jason Voorhees?  Where is the 2013 version of Freddy Kruger?  What happened to those scary villains we grew up with and why are they non-existent in movies these days?  There have been some weak attempts over the past 10 years such as that little doll mask person from the movie ‘Saw’ but who’s really afraid of him?  And then I started to think about it and I believe I have it figured out…

Who needs scary movies or deadly villains when you’ve got these insane people right here in your own city doing the unthinkable?   Jason Voorhees has been replaced with Philip Chism, the 14-year old boy who killed his algebra teacher with a box cutter while she was attempting to help him with his work after school.  Freddie Kruger has been replaced by Ronald Ayers who gave a woman and her 3-year-old daughter nightmares after kidnapping and raping the woman while she held her baby.  The Boogie Man has been replaced by a 12-year-old boy who walked through the hallways of Sparks Middle School and began shooting at students.  And zombies are being replaced with drugs like Krokodil that eats your flesh right off of your body!

Hell, watching the nightly news is enough to leave you scared out of your mind, leaving all the lights on, and sleeping with a baseball bat, gun, knife or whatever you can grab.  I remember last year driving past my house and seeing a man in a black hoody, who was obviously going through some type of bad drug trip or something, starring at all of the cars driving by with the most evil face I have ever seen, twitching his body, yelling and grunting.  He paced up and down the block making motions at cars, and as I looked out my window to see what he was doing he turns around and looks directly at me! (Agghhh!) Of course I ducked off to the side and eventually he left the block but best believe that night I went to bed strapped and every noise I heard woke me up and I swept through the house on commando mode.

But seriously, I don’t know if the world is getting crazier or the news is doing a better job at exploiting the bad things that happen.  Either way all of it is very frightening and very REAL.  So don’t wait until Halloween to look out for creeps, killers, and witches.  Be more aware of your surroundings, look for signs of danger, invest is some type of protection, and don’t be afraid to scream!
