BMX bike legend Dave Mirra passed away on Thursday after what officials are saying was an apparent suicide.

Dave, who at one point held the record for the most X Games medals, was found by police in Greenville, N.C.

Cops say they found the 41-year-old’s body in his truck with what seemed to be an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was visiting friends in the area shortly before authorities found his body.

Greenville’s Mayor, Allen Thomas, said of the tragic incident, “We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon.

Dave, who is considered one of the few BMX icons to transcend beyond the sport and create a lasting legacy, was the face of several BMX video games as well as the host of the MTV hit show Real Word/Road Rules Challenge for two seasons.

Close friend and current host of the show T.J. Lavin told TMZ, “I just wish he would have called me. I would have jumped on a plane in a second. There’s always another way. If anyone needs help, just please get it. I feel sick about this.”

He also posted this photo on Instagram:

Dave is survived by his wife and two children.
