Update: The Giudice’s made their appearance in court this morning, where the couple were released on $500,000 bond each and ordered to turn over their passports and keep their travel confined to New York and New Jersey. According to the New York Post, the bonds were furnished by Joe Giudice’s parents. Things got a little tense, according to reports, with his mom told reporters to “go F*** themselves” on the way out of the court and Joe Giudice taking a swipe at a reporter’s camera. The couple will be back in Newark for a court date on August 14. Maybe they’ll leave mom and dad at home next time.

They haven’t entered pleas, but if found guilty, Joe Giudice could be deported to Italy.

“The most serious charges the couple face, bank fraud and loan application fraud, carry a maximum potential penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine,” writes the Post.

The legal drama for Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise spreads across all geographic locations. So we turn to New Jersey where the Giudices — Teresa and Giuseppe (aka “Joe”) have been indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud lenders, illegally obtaining mortgages and other loans by allegedly hiding income, conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, and a number of other tax and fraud charges, totaling 39 counts. “Those charges carry a combined maximum of 55 years in prison and $1.5 million fine,” reports Business Insider.

The grand jury indictment was announced today, which also included allegations that Joe Giudice didn’t file taxes between 2004 and 2008. It’s always the taxes! Uncle Sam will get his money.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said,”Everyone has an obligation to tell the truth when dealing with the courts, paying their taxes and applying for loans or mortgages. That’s reality.”

The couple filed for bankruptcy in 2009, saying they had $10 million in debts. ABC News quotes Teresa Giudice’s attorney Henry Klingeman who said in a statement, “The judicial process that begins today with an indictment is a search for the truth. As it moves forward, we look forward to vindicating her.”

For her part, Teresa said, “Today is a most difficult day for our family. I support Joe and, as a wonderful husband and father, I know he wants only the best for our lovely daughters and me. I am committed to my family and intend to maintain our lives in the best way possible, which includes continuing my career. As a result, I am hopeful that we will resolve this matter with the government as quickly as possible.”

There was no quote from Joe Giudice.

The couple will appear in court in Newark, NJ Tuesday at 10am ET.
