After debuting at #2 during its opening weekend, slightly behind the new “Harry Potter”, the animated “Tangled” took the weekend box office in its second weekend.
“Tangled,” Disney’s modernized take on the classic children’s tale “Rapunzel,” was able to wrestle the box-office crown away from “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” over the weekend. The film, which features the voices of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, earned $21.5 million over the weekend, to put its estimated domestic gross at just over $96 million as it closes in on 100.
Although it already surpasses the $200 million box-office mark, the new “Potter” is finally losing a little steam, but still managed to come in at #2 this weekend. In its third weekend, the film earned just $16.7 million, down from over $50 million in its second weekend, and another $125 its first.
“Burlesque” followed behind the top two films to come in third, with moviegoers spending $6.1 million to see Cher and Christina Aguilera’s musically-driven flick about a down-on-her-luck club owner and her starry-eyed young protégé. It did move up one spot from last weekend’s #4 opening though.
“Unstoppable” stayed within the top tier this weekend, coming in at #4, taking $6.1 million, as fans came out to watch the Denzel Washington film about a a runaway train carrying dangerous cargo.
The romantic drama, “Love and Other Drugs”, closed out the top five with $5.7 million. The movie stars Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal.
The top debut this weekend was the Kate Bosworth western/martial arts action film, “The Warrior’s Way,” opening at #9 with just over $3 million.
That’s a wrap for this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the highly anticipated new fantasy “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” and the Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie romantic thriller “The Tourist.”
