Last night I had the pleasure of witnessing the many talents of the students from the School For Creative & Performing Arts. The Instrument Music Department put on a two part composition from various composers. The music montage was directed by Todd B. Conley and David R. Burchfield. Mr. Burchfield referenced contemporary artists of today, such as Madonna, Drake, and Prince and reminded us that even back in the 17thcentury, artists such as Tschesnokoff, carried only one name.  Perhaps he’s a fan of the WIZ and our sister station MOJO 100.3. The Concert Band kicked things off followed by the Wind Ensemble.  It felt like I was listening to a Disney soundtrack live! During the performance I found out this selected group of students also play concerts at UC’s College Center of Music. Mr. Burchefield made it clear, that studying both collectively and privately is “the key to a splendid performance”.

After the show, I was given a  backstage tour by Chris Lucas. Chris is a sophomore who studies percussion.  He plays Timpani, Cymbal, Bass Drum, Gong, Chimes, and Maracas.  And as a student of the membranophones, I couldn’t resist the temptation to beat my heart out for a few minutes. Check the pictures! He even taught me one of the fills the percussion section played that evening. Thank you Chris, I’ll never forget that magic moment!

Thank you to the students of SCPA. You are truly gifted! Parents have often said “you’re investing in your child’s college” when you enroll them in the School For Creative & Performing Arts. Remain on your musical quest. Success is yours for the taking!
