Every blue moon there’s a hit record that comes out of nowhere that can easily be heard blasting out of the car speakers flying by while you’re standing on the corner or suddenly grabs your attention with increased spins on the radio. The major airplay R&B newcomer Frank Ocean has quickly drummed up with his summer sizzler “Novacane” has not only gained the singer/songwriter a solid fan base, but also enough mainstream support that now fellow R&B singers are taking a shot at duplicating his soul-baring vibe on the same record.
Cue R&B singer/songwriter Dawn Richard whom we know now from her days with Danity Kane and most recently Diddy Dirty Money collective. She’s another incredible vocalist and has an amazing talent for penning some serious tunes. Ironically the two are both originally from New Orleans, LA and shared the same tragic experience of being displaced from their roots in the deep south after the devastating Hurricane Katrina swept through their beloved city.
If tragedy begets inspiration and passion, the proof is definitely in the pudding. Check out Dawn Richard’s equally mesmerizing cover of Frank Ocean’s hit single and tell us if both versions are going to be added to your summer 2011 playlist. We already know we’ve downloaded every bit of Frank and Dawn’s solo catalog so listen out for more if you like what you hear. We think it’s safe to say that real R&B has indeed weathered the storm.
DID DAWN RICHARD KNOCK THIS ONE OUT OF THE BOX?
