Opal Lee, “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” Recovers from Illness
Health Scare in Cincinnati

Opal Lee, the 98-year-old “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” is recovering after a recent hospitalization. While attending the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center’s 30th anniversary in Cincinnati on May 24, 2025, Lee needed medical attention. Although details about her illness remain private, her family shared positive news. Her granddaughter, Dione Sims, said, “She’s doing well and in good spirits.” Now, Lee awaits discharge to return to Fort Worth, Texas.
A Legacy of Resilience

For decades, Lee has championed Juneteenth, marking the end of slavery in 1865. In 2016, at 89, she walked 1,400 miles from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., to push for Juneteenth as a federal holiday, achieved in 2021. Consequently, her efforts earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024. Even during recovery, Lee’s passion shines. She recently stated, “Juneteenth is about freedom for everyone, and young people must carry it forward.”
Community Support and Future Plans

Despite her health setback, Lee’s influence endures. The Freedom Center will honor her with the International Freedom Conductor Award this fall. Additionally, her annual Opal’s Walk for Freedom is set for June 19, 2025, in Fort Worth. Supporters, inspired by her resilience especially after reclaiming her childhood home’s lot in 2024 are rallying around her. As Lee prepares to return home, her call for unity remains strong.
