The 28-year-old champion, who is still recovering from recent foot surgery, was quoted in a press release that pulling out of the U.S Open tournament “with much frustration and deep sadness.”

While in Munich, Germany, Williams reportedly injured her foot on broken glass at a restaurant. The accident shortly occurred after her dominating Wimbledon singles win, and required surgery in mid July. Williams’s doctors proposed she not play so her foot could properly heal.

After already pulling from several scheduled tournaments, one including the World Team Tennis Competition; Williams described not participating in the U.S. Open, which starts August 30th, as “ one of the most devastating moment of my career.”
