For the second weekend in a row, Sylvester Stallone’s newest action flick, “The Expendables”, reigned supreme at the box office, despite a slew of new releases including “Vampires Suck,” Ice Cube’s “Lottery Ticket”, Jennifer Aniston’s “The Switch” and “Piranha 3D”.
The Stallone-directed film raked in $16.5 million this weekend, raising its two-week total to $64.9 million so far.
In at #2 was the “Twilight” spoof, “Vampires Suck,” pulling in $12.2 million, but took in $18.6 million since it opened Wednesday. The parody film, mocks the “Twilight” franchise with a story about a moody schoolgirl in a love triangle with a vampire and a werewolf.
“Vampires Suck” just edged out the Julia Roberts drama “Eat Pray Love,” which fell from #2 to #3 this week with $12 million.
The Cube Vision comedy, “Lottery Ticket” debuts at #4 with $11.1 million. It features rapper Bow Wow as a young man who becomes the talk of his neighborhood when he wins a $370 million lottery jackpot.
Rounding out the top 5 is “The Other Guys”, which earned $10.1 million in its third weekend.
Outside the top 5 there were three more wide releases…
“Piranha 3D” landed at #6 with just over $10 million. It was inspired by the low-budget 1978 “Piranha,” this time in 3D though. It’s set at a lake where spring-break partygoers are consumed by prehistoric man-eating fish.
The sequel “Nanny McPhee Returns” opened at #7 with; and Jeniffer Aniston’s “The Switch” opened at #8 with a meager $8.1 million.
That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of “Avatar: Special Edition” opening in 700+ theaters, the horror flick “The Last Exorcism” and the action/crime film “The Takers” starring Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen, Matt Dillion, Idris Elba, T.I., and Paul Walker.
