Finally some Twitter etiquette and discipline is on the way. This morning we found a story detailing Cleveland Brown’s coach Eric Mangini’s decision to address the dangers and pitfalls of social media sites. What sparked the conversation with the players? Browns cornerback Brandon McDonald reportedly posted a vulgar Twitter message directed at Cincinnati’s newest wide receiver Terrell Owens. Wasn’t Twitter supposed to be for networking not taking shots at folks and trash-talking with no repercussions?
The tweet surfaced shortly after T.O. officially signed with the Bengals and McDonald claims it was just a joke. Since then, the message has been removed from his account. Twitter has indeed become very popular with celebrities and pro athletes, but Eric Mangini wants his crew to watch out. Mangini says he will not ask his players to discontinue using sites like Twitter, Facebook or YouTube though.
This situation has been an issue for other colleges and pro athletic reps. Boise State coach Chris Petersen has banned players from posting on Twitter for the duration of the season so as not to cause a distraction in the Broncos’ national title chase, but do you all think it’s necessary?
