His Royal Badness, aka his Purple Majesty, aka, The Purple One, aka Prince, or Prince Rogers Nelson will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Awards, airing this Sunday, June 27 at 8PM.
Celebrating his 52nd birthday this month, Prince was born on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a talented entertainer, he is a singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. So talented that he played all of the instruments himself in many of his songs. Known for his eccentricity, Princes has dressed in outrageous clothes and high heels for years, but more importantly wrote and produced some of the best pop songs in the 1980’s that had cross-genre appeal.
Known for songs such as 1999, Purple Rain, Kiss, Raspberry Beret, Prince’s music is influenced by soul, funk, blues, rock, R&B, disco, jazz, and hip hop. It is reported that Prince has written more than 1,000 songs some of which were released by Prince under pseudonyms or recorded and released by other artists.
As an actor, Prince starred in the movie “Purple Rain” in 1984 and the soundtrack sold more than thirteen million copies. The film grossed more than $80 million and won an Academy Award. For the first time in history, Prince simultaneously had a number one movie, single, and album in the U.S.
Prince continues to write from his Minneapolis studio called Paisley Park Studios.
Interesting facts about our Purple Friend:
– He was voted “world’s sexiest vegetarian” in PETA’s annual online poll in 2006.
– A Minnesota Vikings football fan, he owns a skybox at the Hubert Humphrey Metrodome and can be seen at games on a regular basis.
– Prince is a Jehovah’s Witness as of 2001.
– He apparently needs double-hip-replacement surgery but in 2005, Prince said he will not undergo the operation unless it is a “bloodless surgery.” Jehovah Witnesses do not accept blood transfusions.
– A trademark owned by Paisley Park Enterprises, Inc., “Prince” was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2005 in the categories of printed material, clothing, electronic commerce, and entertainment services.
