Are the 80’s and 90’s hip hop and comedy duo making a comeback? Kid ‘n Play have been invited to perform on a variety of talk shows this year, most recently on George Lopez (check out their performance below) last night and on the Mo’Nique Show in February.

It’s hard to believe that it has been 23 years since the duo released their first album 2 Hype (1987) with 3 albums following into 1991. Some of their most successful hits were “Rollin’ with Kid ‘n Play” (performed on Lopez and Mo’Nique), “Funhouse,” and “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody.” Their songs featured their teen-friendly personalities and their trademark dance, the Kick Step.

Look who’s bringing back the hi-top fade…

The duo, Christopher “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin were both born in New York City in the 1960’s. Kid’s trademark was his hi-top fade haircut which stood about ten inches tall, and Play regularly wore eight-ball jackets.

In addition to their hip hop success, the duo starred together in four movies in the 1990’s, all based around hip hop characters…of course you remember, House Party 1, 2, and 3. Class Act followed in 1992 as Kid cut his signature hi-top fade.

Remember the “Dance-off” with Tisha Campbell and A.J. Johnson? (Wow! Check out those outfits!)

So what has the duo been up to since the 90’s? Kid continued to act and starred in a number of television sitcoms. Play became a born-again Christian where he devoted his time to working on Christian-based hip hop music projects. He used his industry experience and founded a multimedia company providing pre/post production for film, digital, and theater productions. He also became a professor at the North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina.

So what do you think? Are they making a comeback or just celebrating the 20 year anniversary of their success? Tell us your favorite Kid ‘n Play moments as we celebrate Black Music Month!
