Maybe it was the NBA Playoffs, or maybe, the endless amount of BBQs going on, or just the choice of movies out. Whatever it was, the weekend box office recorded the worst Memorial Day weekend numbers in 17 years, said reports.

This happened despite two new major releases, “Prince of Persia” and “Sex and The City 2”, both failing to top the weekend’s choice of films.

Instead, it was “Shrek Forever After”, winning its second weekend in a row with $55.7 million over the long weekend.

The second spot was a close race. “Prince of Persia,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, landed at #2 with an opening of $37.8 million; while the highly anticipated “Sex and The City” sequel debuted at #3 with $37.1 million.

“Iron Man 2” came in at #4 in its fourth weekend, earning another $20.6 million to bring its domestic take to $279.1 million.

Closing out the top 5 was “Robin Hood” with $13.6 million.

Total movie ticket sales for the four-day holiday weekend were an estimated $186 million, the lowest total since 2001. That isn’t 17 years, but according to the L.A. Times, with ticket price inflation, the numbers are much worse. The actual number of tickets sold — about 23.4 million — was the lowest since 1993.

That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the Jonah Hill/Russell Brand comedy “Get Him to the Greek”; the action comedy “Killers, starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher; the family comedy “Marmaduke”; and the sci-fi horror “Splice”, starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley.

This weekend’s top 10 is as follows:

1 – “Shrek Forever After,” $55.7 million.

2 – “Prince of Persia,” $37.8 million.

3 – “Sex and the City,” $37.1 million.

7 – “Just Wright,” $2.7 million.

8 – “Date Night,” $2.2 million.
