There was only one film that reigned supreme this weekend, and it was the animated Dreamworks film, “Shrek Forever After.”
The fourth film in the monster franchise roared to the top of the box office over the weekend, raking in $71.3 million in ticket sales. However, according to the Associated Press, it was the weakest debut of all the “Shrek” sequels.
2004’s “Shrek 2” opened with $108 million; and 2007’s “Shrek the Third” made $121.6 million in its first weekend. And … the new film’s numbers comes with the higher priced tickets from its 3D and Imax 3D showings.
In this fourth “Shrek” film, Shrek — voiced by Mike Myers — is going through a midlife crisis, so he makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to live as a fearsome ogre again for one day. Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas return to the voice cast.
Last week’s #1 movie, “Iron Man 2,” fell to #2 this weekend, taking in another $26.6 million. So far, the film has made more than $251 million in three weeks.
In at #3 was “Robin Hood,” which took in $18.7 million in its second weekend; followed by “Letter To Juliet” at #4 with $9.1 million; and “Just Wright,” starring Common and Queen Latifah, closed out the top 5 with $4.2 million.
The other new wide release, “MacGruber,” opened in sixth place with $4.1 million. It’s based on the “Saturday Night Live” television sketch, starring Will Forte as a bumbling version of the mulleted ’80s television character “MacGyver,” who was famous for his makeshift method of defusing threats.
And one other new releases landed in the top tier. It was “Kites,” opening at #10 with just over $1 million.
That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the Jake Gyllenhaal adventure “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” and the release of “Sex and the City 2” opening on Thursday.
