Solange Knowles was just trying to have a good time when she attended the Kraftwerk concert in New Orleans with her husband, son, and his friend.

But the fun evening of electronic dance music went south when two women seated behind her, began yelling and throwing limes to stop her from dancing. The singer tweeted about the experience Friday night, confronting the larger issue at hand.

“Let me tell you about why black girls/women are so angry,” she starts off by saying.

“I took my son, his friend, and my husband to see Kraftwerk in New Orleans. Was very excited to dance and enjoy a band I love. We are four of about 20 black concert goers out 1500 here. We walk in, and one of my favorite songs, ‘Machine’ is on. I’m excited to tell my son about how Hip Hop sampled Kraftwerk. We are dancing. Four older white women yell to me from behind, ‘Sit down now’. I tell them I’m dancing at a concert. They yell, ‘You need to sit down now’. We are at an ELECTRONIC and DANCE music concert and you are telling, not asking me, to sit down. In front of my child. They proceed to throw something at my back.”

Adding, “Now the old me… But in this moment, I’m just going to share my experience. So that maybe someone will understand, why many of us don’t feel safe in many white spaces. We don’t ‘bring the drama’… fix yourself.”

She proceeds to enjoy the concert, going on to upload a video of her dancing during the show.

But that didn’t stop ignorant comments from flooding into her Twitter feed, which she addressed poignantly.

“I see folks saying ‘Well, you live in Louisiana’ but I say I live in a city with THE most incredible, beautiful black folk.” she says.

Currently, 59 percent of New Orleans is African-American with Caucasians at 31 percent. So the argument that there’s more of them, than us, is incorrect. Also, what does it matter?! Respect is respect in any color.

Point is, it’s commendable for Solange calling out these women and others who make experiences like this uncomfortable for the minority.
