The end of an era. As some suspected, Dwyane Wade will be hanging up his Miami Heat jersey for good after 13 seasons with the team, and joining another squad.

Wade announced his decision on Wednesday night that he’ll be moving to the Chicago Bulls. Though he describes it as “an extremely emotional and tough decision” to leave the only team on which he’s ever played, it’s certainly a lucrative one. Wade’s contract is worth $47 million over two years, or $7 million more than the Heat offered for him to stay in Miami.

Still, he insists, it has more to do with a desire to return to his hometown than a number on the contract.

“This was not an easy decision, but I feel I have made the right choice for myself and my family,” Wade wrote in a letter to Miami, released to The Associated Press.

“Watching the Bulls growing up inspired me at an early age to pursue my dream of becoming a basketball player,” Wade continued. “My most treasured memories were watching my dad play basketball on the courts of Fermi Elementary School and developing my game at the Blue Island Recreation Center. I have never forgotten where I came from and I am thankful to have an opportunity to play for the team that first fueled my love of the game.”

Just another major move in the chess game that is going on in the NBA during this off season, especially as salary caps have been lifted.
