Actor Jesse Williams’ acceptance speech at the 2016 BET Awards has been at the center of controversy. A Change.org petition was recently launched in an effort to get Williams fired from the ABC show Grey’s Anatomy. “Jesse Williams spewed a racist, hate speech against law enforcement and white people at the BET awards. If this was a white person making the same speech about an African-American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there has been no consequences to Williams’ actions. There’s been no companies making a stand against his racist remarks and no swift action condemning his negative attitude,” reads the petition. “Why was Burke’s character fired from Grey’s Anatomy after his inappropriate homophobic slur, but nothing for Jesse Williams?” Although the petition has nearly 18,000 signatures, Grey’s Anatomy producer Shonda Rhimes took to Twitter to respond: “Um, people? Boo don’t need a petition. #shondalandrules,” she posted. Williams also chimed in on the matter: “Do not promote empty people & their tantrums. Pure clickbait to gain followers, attention & money, for themselves, not you. Never you,” he posted. Williams was the recipient of the Humanitarian Award for his work with the Black Lives Matter movement. Read more.

Black women are breaking barriers. According to reports, 27-year-old Whitney Ingram will become the first African-American woman to graduate from the University of Georgia with a doctorate degree in physics. Ingram also received her bachelor’s degree in physics from UGA. “I think I was thinking too small and making it much smaller than it was, but I’m just doing what I love,” said Ingram. “Being Black is one thing. But women and even Americans are minorities in the field of physics. I’m basically an anomaly. I’m the first, but I don’t want to be the last. Now that I think about it, I don’t see any black females coming up under me and none of my teachers were Black or even American. I want females to be inspired to do this. I’m honored to be the first at UGA and I’m so happy that I can reach and inspire others.” Ingram will receive her degree in December. After school, she wants to work at the Department of Defense.
