Details are so gruesome that the presiding judge sealed documents until they were released after an April 22 preliminary hearing, writes the MagicValley.com.
The case in question revolves around a Black disabled football player with learning disabilities who was allegedly sexually assaulted on October 23, 2015 by three of his White teammates in a high school locker room in Dietrich, Idaho.
In his testimony, the victim said he was reaching in for a hug when three of his teammates charged him and stuck a coat hanger in his rectum. One player kicked the coat hanger three times, inflicting further rectal injuries, a criminal complaint obtained by the Washington Post says.
“I screamed,” the victim testified. “I was pretty upset. I felt really bad. A little bit betrayed and confused at the same time. It was terrible — a pain I’ve never felt, “ the victim said in court.
The state attorney has filed sexual assault charges against the three alleged attackers after months of investigation, writes the Post.
John R.K. Howard, 18, was identified by the victim’s family as the ringleader of the attacks. He, along with teammate Tanner Ward, 17, will be tried as adults and charged with one count of forcible penetration by use of force or a foreign object. The third alleged attacker, 16, will face trial in juvenile court.
In early May, the victim’s family filed a $10 million suit in Idaho’s U.S. District court, saying the boy experienced repeated attacks of abuse and harassment. The Washington Post has obtained the civil suit, but will not release the victim’s name because he is a minor.
Dietrich High School and 11 school administrators and coaches are also named in the suit. The family says certain school officials and coaches stood by and even encouraged months of racially motivated attacks.
The Post writes:
The victim “was taunted and called racist names by other members of the team which names included ‘Kool-Aid’ ‘chicken eater’ ‘watermelon’ and [the N-word],” the suit alleges.
The civil complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Idaho also claims that one of the students charged with sexual assault displayed a Confederate flag and demanded the victim recite a racist song titled “Notorious KKK.”
The suit claims that Dietrich football coaches encouraged other players to fight the victim, allowing a much larger student to knock him unconscious as other students shouted “catcalls, taunts and racial epithets.”
News of the sexual assault case has ripped apart the small town of Dietrich. According to the U.S. Census, there are approximately 305 residents, and 95 percent of them are White.
