Premiere Of Dimension Films' 'Scary Movie 5' - Red Carpet

In an interesting twist to an already controversial story, Charlie Sheen revealed he temporarily went off his HIV medications.

Sheen, who has been a staple of American pop culture over the past few years, was diagnosed with the disease in 2011. After rumors and speculations of the star’s diagnosis, he came clean and confirmed his status in November on the Today show. During his highly-publicized interview, Sheen claimed he had undetectable amounts of HIV in his blood. (Experts say undetectable amounts of the virus in your blood mean it is almost impossible to transmit if practicing safe sex and routinely taking the prescribed medication.)

However, in an interview pre-recorded for The Dr. Oz Show, Sheen informed the doctor he had been off his meds, “for about a week now.” Sheen added, “Am I risking my life? Sure. So what? I was born dead. That part of it doesn’t phase me at all. ”

The interview was part of a segment that delved into the alternative medications Sheen chose to take.

The treatment, which Sheen traveled to Mexico for, was administered by Dr. Sam Chachoua who, according to other medical professionals, is not licensed to practice in the U.S.

Oz also interviewed the Mexican doctor who was so sure of his treatment that he injected himself with some of Sheen’s blood. Chachoua told Oz, “I drew some blood from him and I injected myself with it and I said, ‘Charlie, if I don’t know what I’m doing, then we’re both in trouble now aren’t we?’

Sheen did not go into detail about what the treatment entailed, but he doesn’t recommend the treatment he received in Mexico to everyone.

Sheen said, “I didn’t see it as Russian roulette. I didn’t see it as a complete dismissal of the conventional course we’ve been on. I’m not recommending that anyone – I’m presenting myself as a type of guinea pig.

However, Sheen’s manager confirmed to PEOPLE that Sheen began taking his medication again on Dec. 8 following the original taping of The Dr. Oz Show.

The interview with Sheen aired Tuesday.
