Obama Rings In Labor Day By Extending Paid Sick Leave

On Monday, President Barack Obama spoke before a union rally and breakfast in Boston to announce his executive order facing federal contractors to pay employees while on leave. The measure includes time off to care for sick relatives; it has yet to be said how much federal contractors would have to pay to follow suit with the order but the Labor Department says costs would be counteracted by better employee retention. Obama has signed other executive orders to improve the workplace including barring employers for discrimination against employees for their gender or sexual orientation, increasing minimum wage and making contractors eligible for overtime. Yesterday, the president of France, François Hollande, announced that he will be taking in 24,000 refugees over the next two years as his solution to the migration problems that have been plaguing Europe. Britain and Germany have also responded to the crisis, as Prime Minister David Cameron has said that he will take in 20,000 Syrian refugees while Chancellor Angela Merkel has promised to set aside $6.7 billion for the crisis. Migrants from Serbia continue to trek across Hungary’s borders, walking day and night and weathering cold temperatures to make it across highways, railroad tracks and razor-wire fences. However, it is the very health care coverage that Obama designed and signed into law under the Affordable Care Act that is now making women less reliant on Planned Parenthood’s services.
