Inmate’s Estate Awarded $2.5 Million After Prisoner Dies Of Thirst In Custody
The family of Michael Kerr has reached a settlement of over $2 million with the NC Department of Public Safety after Kerr died of dehydration following 35 days of solitary confinement. Kerr, 54, suffered from mental illness and had been cited for violations from prison staff shortly before his death. Reports say that authorities failed to give Kerr’s treatment for his schizophrenia while he was imprisoned. Read more the Huffington Post.
Target Sues Man After He Saved A Customer Who Was Stabbed By A Homeless Man
These are one of those news stories you just can’t make up. Michael Turner is being named in a lawsuit from Target after he caught a homeless man that stabbed 16-year-old Allison Meadows inside one of the franchise’s Pennsylvania locations. Target says that if Turner hadn’t chased after the homeless man with a baseball bat, Meadows wouldn’t have been stabbed. However, both Turner and Meadows’ attorney argue that Turner was a hero and that Target is attacking Turner so that it is not prosecuted for failing to keep its customers safe. Despite Economic Recovery, More US Children Suffer From Poverty Today Than Before Recession
A new study from the latest Kids Count Data Book says that poverty among American children has increased, as 22 percent of children were living in poverty in 2013 versus 18 percent in 2008. Experts attribute single-parent households and lack of secure employment as leading causes behind the problem. On a brighter note, high school graduation rates are at a record high and children are increasingly gaining access to health insurance. Read more at the New York Times.
Study Finds African Americans Twice As Likely To Suffer From Cardiac Arrest Than Whites
A report from medical researchers has revealed some alarming statistics on Blacks’ risk of suffering from cardiac arrest. Black men make up 175 cases of cardiac arrest per 100,000 a year compared to White men who only make up 84 cases. Similarly, Black women make up 90 cases per 100,000 a year versus only 40 among white women. The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation states about 90 percent of those with cardiac arrests unrelated to injuries will die. Read more at the Huffington Post.
Bill Cosby Still Delusional, Demands Rape Accuser Be Sanctioned For Trying To ‘Smear’ Him
The disgraced comedian has spoken out about his rape allegations, this time taking legal action against Andrea Constand for trying to ‘smear’ him by releasing parts of a 2005 deposition. In the deposition, Cosby admitted to pursuing women with quaaludes, a recreational substance popularly used in the seventies and eighties as a sedative. Cosby’s complaint is that Constand violated their agreement from the settlement to keep related documents confidential. Read more at The Telegraph.
