The latest Ebola patient, a doctor who contracted the virus while working in Sierra Leone, has arrived in the United States.
Dr. Martin Salia was diagnosed on Monday, but he only just touched down in Nebraska for treatment today. The Associated Press reports that he’ll be receiving care at a biocontainment facility, where two other Ebola patients are also being housed.
He wasn’t flown out sooner because health care workers only recently deemed him stable enough to fly. His crew of health care workers took it a step further by stating that he was critically ill upon arrival earlier today, and that he is “possibly sicker than the first patients successfully treated in the United States.”

Seeking treatment in the states might be his best chance at recovery because of the 10 patients treated for Ebola here, only one has died. So far Martin, who was born in Sierra Leone before moving to Maryland, is the fifth doctor to contract Ebola in Sierra Leone. None of the others have survived.
Martin had been working as a general surgeon at Kissy United Methodist Hospital, but it’s not clear if he was working directly with Ebola patients. He came down with Ebola on November 6, but doctors almost missed diagnosing him then. Initially, he’d tested positive for Ebola at the time. He came up positive after he was tested again on Monday.
