“Go Big Red” was and has always been the school motto for Hughes Center. The school is historical and has been a valuable part of the Clifton community and the community of Cincinnati since 1847.  This weekend I got a chance to reconnect with my classmates thanks to my  classmates Alyx Harley, class president and Producer and Song writer Evan Johnson (Young Ex). The graduating class of “08” gathered together at Bellevue Park to rejoin after 7 years on Saturday.  Hughes has always stood out in the community more than other high schools because they always offered a curriculum that concentrated on the specific interest of the students.  For example, Zoology students learned about animals and received the opportunity to work at the zoo. Hughes use to have programs likes Zoology, Health, Paideia, Camus and most importantly Communications.

As a result, the one thing that I learned from Hughes Center that I will always remember is how to be an effective communicator, and I mean this in the sense of being an On Air Talent.  Our time in class, learning speaking techniques, the steps necessary to develop photos, and learning to write from a journalistic standpoint was not in vain. Praise God for great teachers. Shout- out to Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Mahoney, Ms. Firis, Ms. Collins, Ms. Gordon, Ms. Sage, and Ms. Jones, Mr. Sorrentino, Mr. Brady, Ms. Farrell, Mr. M and unnamed teachers  for being so great. Rest In Peace to Mr. Salihe and Ms. Sullivan.

Also, Special Thanks to DJ HD Like the TV and rapper, Lantana for stopping through and hanging out with us.
It was great seeing everyone this weekend. Here’s 4 Reasons I feel it’s important to maintain a connection with your classmates:

girls

1.       Motivate One Another –You sat in class together, some of us shared friendships along with similar dreams. “We are all at different points in our lives , doing different things.  I think we could motivate each other to do better!”  says classmate Joeneeia Smith. It is very important to have a healthy support system.  After-all, We can relate to one another.

2.       Network Together – “It’s important to catch up” says rapper David Rogers (D -Rodge). He’s right,  you never know how you may be able to help someone. We can work together and coordinate ideas to create opportunities that could possibly help us reach our goals. God has planted a seed in all of us and he just wants us to blossom.  I learned today that I have classmates that are entrepreneurs, producers, coordinators, rappers, teachers and more. Everyone has a purpose we are all in each other lives for a reason. We must make sure that we are letting our light shine while helping others discover and develop their light.

3.       Have Fun – Sometimes you have to go back to a place that’s comfortable.” It’s always fun to be with our family away from our family. says Kendhra Greene “I felt when I seen them all over again it was like being at a family reunion. “Lives for us all have changed since high school.  People have had kids, lost family members, and some of us are grinding and trying to pursue our dreams. Think of your classmates like extended family. Sometimes we get caught up in life and forget to live. It’s great to have moments to just have fun and reminisce on the days when life was so simple. We had no bills, no kids, and no responsibilities but completing school work and making sure our chores were completed.

4.        Reconnect – In high school all types of things happened. Some classmates gained lifetime friendships, some of the high school couples are engaged some are broken up and  most importantly some people discovered their talents, and themselves. Class reunions can be an outlet to settle differences and to build an empire. It is very important to maintain a lifetime bond with childhood friends.  Can you name someone who knows you better than your childhood friends? It’s a great thing for us to experience one another’s transformation from adult hood as a whole. Life is too short and let’s be honest . . . “There’s entirely way too much technology to lose contact with a person who has ever made an impact in any of our lives,” says Alyx Harley.

“I highly suggest if anyone out there has an opportunity to reach out to a loved one that you do it today.” Tomorrow is not promised, do it TODAY and I mean RIGHT NOW!
