Make a movie date for the weekend or even a matinee  during the weeke to check out the latest movies to be released!! (Via Ballerstatus)Despite Tom Hanks’ performance as Captain Phillips, it’s Gravity who holds down the top spot at this weekend’s box office.

The Sandra Bullock-George Clooney space drama holds onto the #1 for the second straight weekend, taking in $44.2 million to being its domestic total to $123.4 million. The film is set in space, where medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift.

“They say what goes up must come down, but that’s not really true with Gravity,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box office tracker Rentrak, told the AP. “To have opened as big as it did last week and only drop 21 percent, that’s really an amazing hold. It’s a direct testament to the word of mouth on the movie.”

Sony’s Captain Phillips debuted at #2, earning a respectable $26 million. The film, which stars Tom Hanks and directed by Paul Greengrass, tells the story of a cargo ship captain who is held captive by Somali pirates.

The animated Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 lands at #3 with $14.2 million, bringing its domestic haul to $78 million.

The weekend’s other new release, Machete Kills, opened in fourth place with $3.8 million. The film is the gun-toting sequel to

Robert Rodriguez’s 2010 action, Machete. It stars Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez.

Closing out the top 5 is Runner Runner, which takes in $3.7 million to bring its two-week total to just $14.1 million.
