23-year-old boxer Adrien Broner improved to a perfect 27-0 after edging past Paulie Malignaggi Saturday night, winning Malignaggi’s WBA welterweight title in the process. Things got worse for Malignaggi in the post-fight interview. Broner had been repeatedly teasing Malignaggi in the buildup to the fight over an ex-girlfriend, who accompanied Broner to a pre-fight press conference Friday. After winning Saturday, Broner needled Malignaggi again.
“I left with his belt, and his girl,” Broner bragged, but Malignaggi was still in the ring, and the scene quickly devolved into something straight out of middle school. Malignaggi, already beaten in the ring, coined what will likely be his signature phrase: “Don’t brag about taking my side piece.” Malignaggi later claimed that Broner won the split decision because he was the “more politically-connected fighter.”
