Every so often there’s a hip hop phenom who touches our hearts and leaves our heads confused at the same damn time. Trinidad James falls into this category. I’m not really sure who he is or where he came from (I’m assuming the Ratchet Holyland that we call Atlanta), but he has really blown up within the past month. With his mixtape, Don’t Be S.A.F.E., the video for his song “All Gold Everything” which caught close to two million views, and his performance in his first NYC show last night,  it seems like people just can’t get enough.

I finally bit the bullet and watched “All Gold Everything” (video below) this week, and my first thought was when did Jerome from Martin start rapping? It was everything I expected it to be. A ratchet good time! (Thanks you, Based Santa Claus.) However, I still can’t fully commit to this wave hip hop has been on because it all seems like a real life MadTV sketch that I can’t turn off.

Remember that scene from Brown Sugar when Taye Diggs walks into the studio and Rin and Tin the Hip Hop Dalmatians were recording “The H*e is Mine”? That’s what I feel like every time I listen to the radio. Every. Single. Time. And it’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s not all that appealing to me, but I do find it entertaining sometimes.

We’ve seen a lot of these real life parodies that have come into music. Here are a few we love and hate:

Soulja Boy

He became a true Internet sensation when he put his song, “Crank That,” on YouTube, and it spawned a whole dance craze. He had some catchy twerk-able songs, but it wasn’t enough to take him seriously. Especially when “Pretty Boy Swag” came out it was like the digital age “Whisper Song”. He killed swag, as in the word. He should go to jail for these offenses.

Gucci Mane

Burr. It’s cold in here. There must be a rapper in the atmosphere. Okay, that might not be right, but the ice cream faced rapper wants us to take him seriously with his rhymes. He actually (as well as Soulja boy in the video) has been spoofed for his “slow” and  wack rhymes.

Dem Franchize Boys

Things got so bad for us. “Snap” music was an actual genre for a second.  Rap has always been consumed with clothes, a song about white tees that we snapped our fingers to? And long white tees at that. Dem Franchize Boyz were an absolute fad that I’m glad got lost at the laundromat.

Vanilla Ice

He was MC Hammer’s white doppelganger who is probably the biggest one-hit wonder of all time. Who else would dance around with giant turtles and be serious about it?

Mike Jones

Who? Exactly. This guy put his phone number on a shirt as a gimmick to be famous. He had to change his number, and guess what? No one calls him ever.

Who else deserves to be on the list?
