You may or may not be familiar with 90’s female Rap Duo, Conscious Daughters, they helped pave the way for women in the music industry today. Conscious Daughter’s reigned during a time when female emcees were very few and far between especially when it came to Gangsta Rap. The group consisted of Special One, Karryl Smith and Carla CMG Green. The ladies hailed from the Bay Area and were signed to Scarface/Priority Records. They dropped classics that bumped in the low rides up and down the West Coast such as (Something to Ride To) Fonky Expedition, We Roll Deep, Sticky Situations, Gamers and more. These women spoke to the issues happening in the streets. The next time you hear the phrase “Ear to the Streets” know that TCD were one of the firsts to coin that idiom. Ear to the Street was in fact the first album released by the femcee’s in 1993.

On December 10th 2011, the Special One, Karryl Smith passed away. At this time the cause of death is still unknown.

-Rest in Peace to the Special One, Karryl Smith-
