The weekend belonged to “Limitless,” who easily took the #1 spot at the weekend box office, pulling in $19 million.
The sci-fi thriller from Relativity Media stars Bradley Cooper as a struggling writer who takes a magical pill that allows him to tap into his maximum brain potential. Suddenly, he goes from broke to making millions and a success overnight, all from one pill.
“Limitless” was ahead of the pack, with the animated “Rango” holding onto #2 for the second week in a row with $15.3 million to close in on the $100 million mark; while last weekend’s top film, “Battle: Los Angeles,” lands at #3 with $14.6 million.
It was a slow weekend, overall. The other new releases battled for the fourth and fifth spots.
At #4 was the thriller, “The Lincoln Lawyer”, starring Matthew McConaughey as a sleazy defense attorney on a high-profile case. It made an estimated $13.4 million.
Then, closing out the top 5 was “Paul,” starring Seth Rogen as the voice of a pot-smoking, wise-cracking alien who befriends a couple of British sci-fi geeks. The comedy pulled in $13.2 million.
That’s a wrap for this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of the Fox comedy “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” starring Steve Zahn, and the Warner Bros. action “Sucker Punch.”
