Ohio’s recreational cannabis market is evolving, and starting June 4, 2025, adult-use purchase limits will see significant changes. According to the Division of Cannabis Control (DCC), these updates aim to balance supply, demand, and access for both recreational and medical consumers. Consequently, Ohioans aged 21 and older will enjoy expanded purchasing power, reflecting the state’s growing cannabis infrastructure since adult-use sales began in August 2024. Here’s what you need to know about the new limits and their impact.

New Daily Purchase Limits

As of June 4, adults can buy up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower daily, a substantial increase from the current one-ounce cap. Additionally, the total THC limit for non-plant products, like edibles or vape cartridges, rises to 15,000 milligrams per day. For example, purchasing a 500 mg vape cartridge and a 100 mg gummy pack counts as only 600 mg toward the daily cap. Therefore, consumers have greater flexibility to stock up without hitting restrictive thresholds.

Protecting Medical Marijuana Access

Importantly, these changes don’t affect medical marijuana patients, who continue under the existing 90-day supply rules per Ohio Administrative Code. Dispensaries must prioritize inventory for medical users, ensuring their access remains unhindered. Thus, the DCC’s approach balances recreational growth with patient needs.

Market and Compliance Impacts

Furthermore, dispensaries aren’t required to sell the maximum allowable amounts, allowing flexibility based on inventory. However, they must update point-of-sale systems to track THC content accurately via the state’s Metrc system. Non-compliance risks enforcement action. As a result, Ohio’s cannabis market is poised for growth, but consumers should stay informed to navigate these changes responsibly.
