After three consecutive weekends at #1, “Inception” was finally knocked off the top of the weekend box office by the buddy-cop parody “The Other Guys,” which took in $35.6 million.

The film, which stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, was the second-highest debut for a film in which Ferrell has starred, and another strong showing for a movie with frequent collaborator, writer-director Adam McKay. Together, their biggest opening was “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” which debuted at #1 with $47 million in August 2006. Their film, “Step Brothers”, made $30.9 million and came in second place when it opened in July 2008. And their first film together, “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” opened in second place in July 2004 with $28.4 million.

In “The Other Guys,” Ferrell plays a nerdy, uptight New York police detective who’d rather solve crimes from his desk than run into danger on the streets. Wahlberg is his hot-tempered, frustrated partner who’s desperate for action. The movie also stars Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson.

Behind “The Other Guys” was the mind-bender “Inception,” landing at #2 with $18.6 million. So far, the film has taken $227.7 million, domestically, since its debut July 16.

The weekend’s other wide release was the dance sequel “Step Up 3-D” from Disney. It came in at #3 with $15.5 million.

“Salt” landed at #4 with $11.1 million and “Dinner For Schmucks” took #5 with $10.5 million.

That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of Julia Roberts’s new drama “Eat Pray Love,” Sylvester Stallone’s new action “The Expendables,” and the action comedy “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.”
