Police say a Detroit woman fatally shot her husband and a child was caught in the middle on the city’s northwest side Monday.

According to neighbors police had been at the scene for more than five hours investigating what has now been confirmed as a homicide investigation with a second victim shot and taken to the hospital.

FOX 2 is told the woman, 38, has shot and killed her husband and that an 8-year-old girl was wounded and is hospitalized in serious condition. Neighbors say they watched the child get put into an ambulance.

Police are investigating if the shooting was accidental.

Deputy Police Chief Renee Hall said that the shooting began with a verbal altercation.

At about 10 p.m. Detroit police wrapped up a homicide investigation at a house in the 18000 block of Fenton street, just north of 8 Mile.

A second child, an 11-year-old boy, was also home but was not injured. Police say the child ran to a neighbor’s house for help.

Moments before police cleared the scene, a body was brought from the home on a stretcher and taken away in a coroner’s van.

Police are not releasing the names of the victims or additional information about the incident.. Neighbors tell FOX 2 they had just moved to the area before this happened.

Michigan sheriff: Girl, 11, hides in closet with shotgun, scared off burglar

Authorities say an 11-year-old girl pointed a shotgun to scare off a man invading her home in Michigan’s rural Thumb.

Lapeer County sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Jason Parks calls her a “very brave girl” who “held her composure” and helped investigators catch the 53-year-old intruder.

She was alone in the North Branch Township home Friday afternoon when the break-in occurred and hid inside a bathroom closet.

The suspect opened the door but fled when she pointed the shotgun at him. Authorities arrested him and a 31-year-old companion soon after in Imlay City.

James Wasson of Detroit was arraigned Sunday in Lapeer District Court on home invasion, burglary and firearms charges. Rhonda Stewart of Detroit was arraigned on home invasion.

She has no lawyer on record, and his lawyer declined comment Monday.
