Tim Burton’s “Alice In Wonderland” fell to #2 at this weekend’s box office, thanks to the release of the new DreamWorks animation adventure, “How To Train Your Dragon.”

The new film opens at #1 with $43.3 million effort, taking the throne by over $26 million. 68% of its take was from its 3D showing. The closet film behind it was “Alice” with $17.3 million.

The animation, which features the voices of Baruchel and America Ferrera, is a tale of a Viking youth who tames a fire-breathing reptile. Dreamworks hopes the strong outing is just the beginning.

“People just love the film, so we’re really anticipating we’ll benefit from strong word of mouth going forward,” Anne Globe, head of marketing for DreamWorks, told the Associated Press.

“Alice In Wonderland” comes in at #2 with $17.3 million this weekend, taking its domestic total just $7 million shy of the $300 million mark.

John Cusack’s comedy “Hot Tub Time Machine” opened with at a lukewarm #3 debut of $13.7 million. The film features Cusack as part of a group of losers hurled back by a time-traveling hot tub to the 1980s, where they have a chance to set their lives right.

In at #4 is the Jennifer Anniston, Gerard Butler comedy “The Bounty Hunter,” dropping one spot with $12.4 million; and closing out the top 5 is “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” taking in $10 million.

Later, at #15, the narrower release of Sony’s “Chloe” opened with $1 million in justt 350 theaters.

That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the highly anticipated re-make of “Clash of the Titans,” the Miley Cyrus drama “The Last Song,” and Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too”.
