ARNICE SMITH
These days it is challenging to be the first at much of anything. That is why it surprising, and truly special, when we hear that someone has accomplished something for the very first time. Arnice Smith is a woman of Cincinnati who has done just that. In 2005 Mrs. Smith made history by becoming the first African American Ohioan to be named “New York Times’ Librarians of the Year”.
Currently the branch manager of the College Hill Library, Mrs. Smith decided to become a librarian after a childhood experience of learning to read at a late age motivated her towards education. She continues to make history by way of her outstanding career span with the Cincinnati Public Libraries, having worked and contributed to the system for over 30 years.
She not only services the community at work but also in her own efforts in the College Hill neighborhood. She tutors, has a variety of book clubs and offer positive settings for young people to grow in healthy social ways.
When she retires from CPL she plans to continue her mission of instilling the love of reading in young people by becoming a teacher. She’ll soon have a Masters in Early Childhood Education.
