Superstar singer Beyonce has achieved a rare and unusual honor. The starlet’s name has been given to a species of horsefly. Australian National Insect Collection researcher/ Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) scientist Bryan Lessard has officially ‘described’ the fly asScaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae–due to its distinctive golden hairs.

“It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me to name this fly in honour of the performer Beyoncé as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy – the naming of species,” Lessard said.

The fly was discovered in 1981 but was previously unnamed. It should be noted that Beyonce was also born in 1981.
