Today the U.N. is symbolically marking the day as that which will propel us into a record of 7 billion human beings inhabiting the earth. Reports indicate lavish ceremonies around the world as infants are born to celebrate life, yet at the same time force us to address the idea of being overpopulated. The U.N. has chosen baby Danica May Camacho, of the Philippines, to represent this magnificent number. There were flashing lights for 5.5 pound little Danica’s honor at Manila’s Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, whose name means morning star. Her mother, Camille Galura, gazed down at her premature miracle and said “She’s so lovely“.

Now that the earth’s population is, or will very soon, reach 7 billion people, what are the things about our world that we realistically need to consider? Will there ever be a shortage of supplies to fulfill basic human needs: water, food, shelter? How do we address the issue in advance?

Dr. Eric Tayag of the Philippines’ Department of Health had this to say:

“Seven billion is a number we should think about deeply,” …

“We should really focus on the question of whether there will be food, clean water, shelter, education and a decent life for every child,” he said. “If the answer is ‘no,’ it would be better for people to look at easing this population explosion.”
