Two years ago today, July 21st 2008, popular female DJ K-Swift died in a swimming pool accident in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. Today, we remember one of the best female DJs to have ever graced a mic and two turntables, DJ K-Swift.

K-Swift, born Khia Edgerton, was just 28-years-old, at the time of her death, although she started DJ’ing at the age of 11, due to the influence of other pioneering DJ’s like Cocoa Channel and Jazzy Joyce.

K-Swift broke ground on Baltimore’s Radio One station 92Q Jams, where she rose to Female Mix Show Coordinator and was the only female in the country to hold the title.

She was also a member of the Core DJs, Violator-All Star DJ Coalition, as well as a member of the all female squad the Murda Mami’s.

In addition to being the only female record pool director in Baltimore (Direct Drive Record Pool), K-Swift also owned Club Queen Entertainment, a graphics management and production company.

K-Swift was and still is an inspiration to me and many female DJs and counterparts across the nation. She broke down barriers and made it possible to believe that dreams can come true with hard work and dedication.

One thing she told me, seeing her at the 2004 “Mixshow Power Summit” in Puerto Rico, was “Keep doing your thing…I’ve seen you everywhere…So you must be doing something right”. That stuck with me and meant so much, because she was one of the first to recognize me and my grind.

She’s proof that as a female DJ, that the sky is the limit. I’m forever grateful for having met and built with such a humble and hard working person.

My condolences and prayers continue to go out to Khia’s (DJ K-Swift) family and friends.

DJ K-Swift, you’ll forever be missed. Rest in peace.
