Zoe Saldana is battling autoimmune disorder Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

The Star Trek actress, 38, reveals she has had to make drastic changes to her lifestyle, including going on a gluten-free diet, as a result of the ailment, which causes the body’s immune system to attack its thyroid gland.

Speaking to Net-A-Porter’s Edit magazine, the star explains how the disease makes her constantly feel run down, and as if she’s always fighting off an infection.

“Your body doesn’t have the energy it needs to filter toxins, causing it to believe that it has an infection, so it’s always inflamed,” the mother-of-two explains. “You create antibodies that attack your glands, so you have to eat clean.”

The actress admits she wasn’t particularly concerned about her health during her youth, as she was convinced she would never fall ill.

“I had a great time in my 20s,” Zoe says. “Then your doctor says you’re losing calcium in your bones. What the f**k is that?! I would hear those conversations with my mum and grandma, thinking I’d never get there. I’m going to live forever! But all of a sudden it hits you. I s**t you not, it’s from night to day.”

Despite her illness, which causes sufferers to experience fatigue and in some cases, suffer hair loss, Zoe has maintained an impressive work schedule, and is a star name in three major movie franchises.

Not only is she starring as Lieutenant Uhura in the new Star Trek Beyond movie, which debuts in the U.K. and U.S. on Friday (22Jul16), she recently filmed the sequel to Marvel Studios’ 2014 comic book blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy.

She is also set to return as the alien Neytiri, from James Cameron’s Avatar, in three follow-up films, which have yet to go into production.

Zoe isn’t the only star to battle the thyroid disease – fellow actresses Gina Rodriguez and Victoria Justice also suffer from the disorder.MWN/EDT/MT)
